The Roof

The roof formwork, a typical example of Mani architecture, was covered with a suspended T & G ceiling. Also, the tiled roof was damaged, resulting in the internal wear of the walls, due to moisture.
The work concerned the change of the roof and its insulation, the removal of the suspended ceiling and the appearance of the formwork, in order to keep the architectural identity of the building and to regain the height of the chapel.
The formwork is the simple type of triangular carrier (type A) consisting of beams (carriers) and a horizontal element nailed close to the middle of the their height, which helps in bearing the horizontal forces. The existing timber of the beams was kept untouched.
The roof was covered with Byzantine type tiles with the usual dimensions for the gutter and lid.

The work was carried out by the Parish of the Holy Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin (Verga,] of the Metropolis of Mani and under the supervision of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia.
